Minutes from the Minister

‘Coming…Ready or Not!’

It makes good sense to prepare well for an important event, whatever it may be.

As the Advent season approaches, our lectionary readings provide themes that help us prepare for the annual celebration of the coming of Christmas the manger child, and beyond to his promised return as Messiah and Lord of All.

This week’s gospel is Matthew’s account of the parable of the bridesmaids – another reminder that God is always coming to us, is always amongst us, and that we need to be alert and watchful lest we miss recognising God’s presence and action in our lives.

Paul’s letter to the Thessalonian church reminds us that life in the Spirit extends beyond death to the end of time when our hope in Christ is fulfilled. Both passages encourage us to embrace and live fully into this hope in the here and now.

In the Old Testament reading, Joshua challenges the people in their commitment to God.

In the face of the complexities and challenges of our modern times, it’s tempting to despair. But when we remember our hope in Christ, when we recommit to stay true to Christ’s message and mission, we can discover the strength and means to continue the work God has set before each of us.

As we look with hope and anticipation to Christ’s coming, we are inspired and challenged to live out this hope by being prepared, alert, and mindful.

This week we pray for…
