Minutes from the Minister:                            The Year of Invitation!

One thing I am very passionate about is church growth.  How our churches grow?  Why they grow or decline?  What can we do to make churches grow?  I have read a number of books about church growth and will continue to.  I’m always interested in finding answers to those questions and then putting the answers into practice.

English Bishop Graham Tomlin says about church growth,

“Healthy well-functioning churches are places where people can be restored and become agents of change and renewal within the world beyond the church.  The reason we need churches to grow is not to pay the bills, or to feel good about ourselves.  It is to enable humanity, in tune with the Spirit of God, to fulfil its divine calling to care for and nurture the world which God has created.”

Growing our church is an important project for us.

In all my reading so far two things have come to the fore.  Churches that grow are churches that experience a real sense of joy, or where people coming can have a sense of joy.  I certainly hope you feel joyous at church.  In a very small way it is why I tell a joke each week.  I know some might say that my jokes are so bad they don’t contribute to a sense of joy, but I try.

The other factor that helps a church grow is that people feel confident to invite their friends and family to come and meet Jesus at church.  It is a simple thing to do.  “Would you like to come to church with me?”  If you can say that then you are trained to be able to invite someone to church.  Our goal this year is to create events, both fellowship events and worship events that you might like to invite someone to come to.

The first of those is coming up at the end of the month when we have our Back to School Pencil Case Blessing service at the 9.30am St Andrew’s service.  Who do think you could invite to this service?  Are you praying for them to say yes to the invite?

If we want our church to grow then we need to be a joyous church and show that joy in our lives.  We also need to be more ready and eager to invite others to come and see.  The year of invitation is chance for us to become that more invitational church we need to be for our church to grow.
