Minutes from the Minister:

Today we meet in Synod in Grafton.  By the time you read this we will have already met on Saturday and considered some general synod ordinances that deal with child protection and how we hold one another accountable for ensuring everyone who comes on church property or within church ministries are safe.

These are important things for us to consider.  We know of some of the failures of church leaders in the past and I don’t wish to relive them here, but reading some of the case studies from the Royal Commission has not been pleasant or easy.  I can say that you go through a mix of emotions in reading the report, from the deepest of sorrow at what was done to some people, to anger at the failure of leaders, to a sense of satisfaction that some are being brought to justice and a sense of frustration that some have and will escape justice.

Please pray for the decisions that were made on the Saturday Synod as they are important decisions that will help us to ensure that all who interact with the church can have some sense that we are doing better at protecting children and the vulnerable.

Of course, the Sunday Synod is a completely different matter.  This Synod will be chaired by Archdeacon Gail Hagon and will have two jobs.  The first is to consider what qualities we want in a Bishop and the second is to elect the committee that will sift through the candidates and choose our next Bishop.  I want to encourage you to pray for the work of the Synod and the committee when it is elected.

As well as that please pray for our next Bishop, whoever they may be.  The following prayer is from the prayer book on page 212.  I want to encourage you to pray it often in the coming months:

Eternal God, shepherd and guide,?in your mercy give your Church in this diocese a shepherd after your own heart who will walk in your ways, and with loving care watch over your people.?Give us a leader of vision and a teacher of your truth. So may your Church be built up and your name glorified;?through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Finally you may notice the yarn bombing on the pulpit.  That is a result of our Pencil Case Blessing service last week.  Each knot on the web is symbolic of a prayer for the coming year at school and a reminder to us all to be praying for students and teachers and parents throughout the year.
