Minute with the Minster:

Today we introduce two programs that we want to begin. The first is a Sunday School program called Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, the second is Mainly Music. The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a system for teaching Sunday School. It is a self directed program in which children work with various materials to learn about their faith. It teaches them the parables of the Kingdom of God, stories of Jesus life, the geography of Israel (so they understand that Jesus was a real person located in a particular place), there is life works where basic skills are taught and also an area to learn about the things we do in church. All of this is done in a place of prayer, a dedicated space in the church or hall called an atrium. In the atrium the children choose which materials to work with to discover for themselves about God and faith.

The second program is Mainly Music and is a weekday program that creates an opportunity to minister to families. It is a program of music, movement and fellowship during which there are a series of songs with actions played. The children and parents go through the music session together. One of the goals of the program is that through touch and joint activity the parent and child grow closer together. Then the children enjoy a morning tea and then play with some toys during which the parents enjoy their morning tea.

Why these two programs?

Both programs will aid us in one of our stated goals of reaching out to families. We are blessed intuit we already have children coming to church, it is our responsibility to form them in faith. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a way to form children in the faith. Mainly Music is a way to reach out to those who don’t currently come to church.

So where can you help?

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd needs materials made, both woodworking and craft. It also needs catechists and assistants. Mainly Music will need helpers to come along and help run the sessions. You don’t need to be musical or be able to play an instrument (all the music is recorded).   We will need people to help prepare the morning teas, to welcome families and to be able to talk with the parents. All you need is an interest in young families coming to church.

I’d encourage everyone to get involved with these two new ministries.
