Minutes from the Minister:

St Andrew’s Day:

`What exactly is a Patronal Festival and why celebrate it?

A Patronal Festival is a day on which we celebrate the saint for whom we are named, or rather the saint who is our patron.  Many years ago the people of Lismore in establishing and building a church here, through presumably much prayer and thought, chose St Andrew to be the patron of our church. Other churches are named for others saints, or particular days in the churches year.  I know of a few churches named for the Ascension or the Transfiguration. They could also be named for doctrines, like Holy Trinity, or named for a part of the Trinity, such as Holy Spirit or Christ Church, like our Cathedral.  It is a sadness to me at least that we don’t have a tradition in the west for naming churches for Holy Wisdom.

So why celebrate?  Well for one we give thanks to God for St Andrew, his life, his works and his example to us.  I will leave it to our guest preacher to expand on Andrew’s life. We also celebrate our Patronal Festival to honour those who worked to establish the church here in Lismore.  Another important reason is for us to celebrate is to join with others who are also under the patronage of St Andrew.  Countries like Greece, Russia, Barbados, Ukraine, Cyprus, Sicily and of course Scotland. Also certain professions are under the patronage of Andrew, like fisherman, rope makers, farm workers, butchers, textile workers, singers, miners, as well as pregnant women.

Another reason for us to celebrate St Andrew is because there is something about St Andrew that influences us. It has always amazed me how churches can take on something of their patron. It’s not a hard and fast rule but you can usually see something of a patron in a church.  I want to challenge you this week to think of what it is about St Andrew that you think influences our church.  What can we do to grow that good aspect of St Andrew?  What can we do to better represent the good of St Andrew amongst our community?

Lastly we celebrate our Patronal Festival because it’s a day of celebration and fun!

Grace and Peace
