Message from your Minister

Grace and Fairness in the Kingdom

Two topics that are guaranteed to stimulate robust discussion in any social gathering are climate change and marriage equality. The latter is particularly controversial and divisive at the moment, especially within church culture.

For those who have been faithful members of a church community over many years, it might seem confusing – even confronting – when some members hold opinions and condone practices that seem at odds with what has become established tradition.

Change can be disturbing and challenging, whilst it can also be invigorating, opening up new possibilities. Yet not all change is desirable or welcome, and whatever position we may hold on any issue, we should extend courtesy to others who may see things differently.

This week’s gospel presents Jesus telling the Parable of the Vineyard Workers (sometimes called the Parable of the Latecomers). It’s a rude reminder that whilst we may take the moral high ground on an issue close to our hearts, God’s grace and generosity defies the world’s logic – we can never earn our way into God’s kingdom, no matter how right or deserving we may think we are.

Holy Scripture reveals a God who loves extravagantly without favourites – who desires that all should respond to his invitation to enjoy his gift of salvation earned through Jesus Christ and so share in the treasure that is eternal life.

The reality is that many whom we might consider unworthy are very much part of the kingdom, or will be. We can be thankful and not begrudge those who ‘turn up late’ for no one deserves to be there – we are only there by grace alone. Rev Alan

Church News

Marriage Equality Postal Survey:  Over the coming weeks we are going to be bombarded with advertising and information, both true and inaccurate.  I want to propose that our morning tea after church become a place of respite from all the advertising and discussion.  There are people within our church family who hold passionate opinions on both sides of the argument.  Whilst it is an important discussion for us to have I would advise that we have that discussion at other times.  I am more than open to those who want to talk about the issue with me, just not after worship.  Let us all take a break from the discussion for just a brief time each week.                Rev Christian Ford.
