Minutes from the Minister:

Next week at the 9.30 service we are celebrating the Pencil Case Blessing.  It is a simple morning prayer service, that is not Communion, during which we celebrate the return of the school year.

During that service, we will ask God’s blessing on all those involved in education.  We will pray for students that they will have a productive year.  We will pray for teachers that they will use their skills and gifts to enlighten the minds of their students.  We also pray that they will have care for their students and have wisdom as they teach their classes.  We will pray for parents and grandparents of students that they may be a good support for their children and grandchildren.  We will pray for all those involved in SRE, Special Religious Education, that they may inspire their students with a love for Jesus Christ.

Finally, we will pray for us all as disciples of Jesus, the word disciple means learner.  We are all to be learners of Jesus Christ.  That is, we are all on the continual journey of learning who we are meant to be and how we behave in life.

We are right at the beginning of the ordinary time of the church’s year and our liturgical colour is green.  The green is to remind us that we are in the season dedicated to our growth is Jesus Christ and our faith in him.  We call it ordinary not because it is a boring time of year but because we set about this growth in an ordered way.

Come along next week to the service and join us in praying for those involved in education.  Remember to bring you pencil case or whatever implement of learning you use. (I’ll be bringing my iPad because I find myself reading the books I learn from on my iPad a lot.)

And if you have no one involved in education in your life then bring your bible as we pray for you in your learning as a disciple of Christ.

This service is a perfect opportunity for us to use our year of invitation as well.  Who is it in your life that is involved in education in some manner that you could invite to come and receive God’s blessing.  Remember all you need to do is be able to say, “Would you like to come to church we me?”  Remember to tell them to bring their pencil case to be blessed.

Rev Christian
