Message from your Minister

Dancing to a Different Beat

The readings over the past few weeks have described ancient people who are prone to complaining and grumbling. Again today in our Exodus passage we hear the people complaining to Moses about anything and everything. Seems whingeing is a human trait that isn’t confined to biblical stories.

As we journey into Paul’s letter to the Philippian church, we can’t help but be encouraged by Paul’s call to unity – to focus on the greater good rather than self-interest.

His call to celebrate the things that bind us rather than what separates us is wise advice for us today, just as it was back then.

3Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. [Phil 2:3]

We may find it difficult to think of Christ’s mind living within us, but Paul’s assurance that this is so is very clear: 5Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus…[Phil 2:5].

It changes things when we consider that through the power of God’s Spirit, Christ chooses to live within each and everyone who calls him Lord. It means that, whilst we are given the gift of free will, we are no longer our own, but belong to him who created us.

This has profound implications for every area of our lives.

The Parable of the Two Sons reminds us that our best intentions and promising words are of no value unless they become actions – unless they translate into what can be seen in the world.

This week, may you reflect and act on those things that give God glory, and give you joy, so that you may be encouraged to live out your faith in ways that make a positive difference to those around you.

Rev Alan.
