Take a Minute…

This week at the back of the church you will find a signup sheet titled “The Watch”. This is a chance for each of us to take up an old spiritual discipline between the service on Maundy Thursday and the first service of Good Friday.

How does it work?

Following the Maundy Thursday service (13/4) the chapel will be set up as a garden, to put us in mind of the Garden of Gethsemane in which Jesus prayed before his arrest and trial. You will remember that during that time he asked the disciples to watch and pray with him, and yet continually found them asleep. He even asked them, “So, could you not stay awake with me one hour?” Matt 26:36-46 This is a chance for us to watch with Jesus during his trial. Everyone is asked to do an hour of prayer during that night.

A Few Practical Notes

It would be best if we have at least two people watching during each hour. If you have a mobile phone, then please bring it to your hour of watch. The closer to the church you live please think about taking the “middle of the night” hours, so that those who live further away might do their hour at the beginning or end of the time.

Why do this?

I believe one of the strengths of our Anglican services of Holy Week is that they ask us to re-enact the events of the last week of Jesus life. In doing so we are drawn into the story of his death and resurrection, it comes more apart of us. That hour or so sitting in silence and praying in the middle of the night has always drawn me closer to Jesus suffering, it has made me more aware of the failure of the disciples and it has ultimately made me more aware of the grace of God.

I would encourage you to sign up for an hour, make the commitment and come and watch and pray with Jesus and the disciples in our Lord’s hours of trial.
