Message from your Minister

So Jesus sends out the twelve to, “cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers and cast out demons.” Sure of course they could do that, they were PETER, ANDREW, JAMES, JOHN etc. They were the twelve, giants of Christianity, people we could and can and still look up to, of course they could be sent out to do those things.

I could never accomplish those things but that because I’m just me, little Christian Ford. I stuff up too much to be like one of the twelve.

I suspect we all probably feel like that when we hear about the twelve being sent out and when we hear of their accomplishments later in life in the Acts of the Apostles. We are just ordinary while they are extraordinary. But think for a moment, at this point they are fishermen & tax collectors & who know what other mundane jobs they came from before becoming an apostle. They probably hear the commands of Jesus to go out and proclaim the kingdom of God with those signs and think, “How are we ever going to do that?” At that early stage I have no idea how successful they were in that task, Matthew doesn’t record how successful they were, Mark and Luke at least give us the information that they did what Jesus had commanded them to do.

I think it doesn’t matter how successful they were because the important bit for me is that they were obedient to Jesus command. Just sometimes I wonder if that isn’t all that separates me from Peter, Andrew, James and John etc. They were obedient to Jesus command to go and speak of the Kingdom of God.

Perhaps what we need in the church today is not the big miracles but rather we need greater obedience to the call to go and proclaim the Kingdom of God. I don’t think we need to go particularly far to do it either. There are plenty of people in Lismore and surrounds that need to hear some good news, that need to hear that in Jesus Christ they can find love, acceptance and forgiveness. There are plenty of people who need to find the loving community of our church.

I know I could be more obedient to that call. Can you? Can you go out this week and find someone to come along to church, so that they might experience the love of God in our love?

Rev. Christian Ford
