Minutes from the Minister:

Some people find comfort and mutual support by mixing only with people like themselves, avoiding those who think differently, who hold different opinions and worldviews to our own, and who may have had very different life experiences.

If we only mix with those like us, there’s a tendency to become insular and inward-focused, which stunts our ability to recognise and seize opportunities to build God’s kingdom as Jesus instructed us.

Admittedly it takes effort and deliberate work to shift our focus away from our own perspectives and concerns to one where we see the interconnectedness of all creation. But it’s worth the effort!

When we begin to see ourselves as citizens of God’s interconnected reign, we open ourselves to the healing that comes from embracing neighbours as friends, and from truly caring for this shared world and its creatures as all being worthy of receiving God’s grace.

We might start to see that the smallest of acts can ripple outward to have great consequences; that small, seemingly insignificant acts of kindness and generosity do actually make a difference and contribute to a better world.

As we choose a discipline to embrace in this season of Lent, we might commit to living more simply – say, to ‘de-clutter’ our home or shed, and in a small way, pay attention to how and what we consume, often without much thought.

Jesus usually preached his message to small groups, calling individuals rather than crowds to follow him. Perhaps you might find God is calling you to join a welcoming small group for the 6 weeks of Lent to explore amongst new friends the selected study topic, ‘The King’s Speech’.

Jesus shows us that it’s in the smaller things that we can have the greatest influence and transformation.

Rev Alan.
