Message from your Minister

Last week I handed out the blue Financial Giving cards as part of our stewardship program.  I have been made aware that there is some confusion about how they work.  Firstly let me apologise for any confusion that the cards have caused, it was not my intent to cause confusion.  So to help let me outline exactly how they work.

Firstly the numbering.  There is no intention to reinstate something like the Wells Program.  While programs like the Wells Program were an attempt to teach Anglicans about regular giving, they had fatal flaws and in a number of people bad memories.  The numbers are not a way to get that program back, I have no interest in starting a program like that.

The numbers are simply a way to protect people’s privacy about what they give.  When you give the card back you cut along the dotted line and place both the smaller section and the larger section in the plate.  Then when they are all collected, the wardens will have the smaller section with only the persons name and what number they have.  They will not know how much any person or family gives.

I will have the larger section with a number on it and how much and what manner people will give.  I will not have any names and will not have access to the list of names.  That will allow a total of pledged money to be given to the Parish Council so a good and useful budget can be worked out for the Annual General Meeting without knowing individually what any one person gives.  There is also the need to get back to people the forms they need for direct debit or we need to know how many sets of envelopes to order.  The envelopes cost money to get and I don’t want to waste money ordering too many envelopes.

The process would work that I would tell the wardens which form or a set of envelopes go to which number and then they would look up the number and give the form or envelopes to the appropriate person.

Your envelopes will not be marked with your number and we will not be checking up on whether or not you fulfill your pledge.  Your pledge is your generous gift to God through the parish and is between you and God, we only wish to know the complete parish total so we can budget properly.

Of course I would like to encourage everyone to start using direct debit giving.  Let me assure you it is very simple and you will remain in control of your money.  There are no fees or charges for direct debit and it makes it easier and safer for those who do the counting and the banking.  You remain anonymous and retain control of your money and can end or change the direct debit at anytime.

Again I would apologise for any confusion and ask that you get the blue cards back as soon as possible.  If you have any questions about the process please feel free to talk to me or the wardens for clarification.

Church News

Marriage Equality Postal Survey:  Over the coming weeks we are going to be bombarded with advertising and information, both true and inaccurate.  I want to propose that our morning tea after church become a place of respite from all the advertising and discussion.  There are people within our church family who hold passionate opinions on both sides of the argument.  Whilst it is an important discussion for us to have I would advise that we have that discussion at other times.  I am more than open to those who want to talk about the issue with me, just not after worship.  Let us all take a break from the discussion for just a brief time each week.                Rev Christian Ford.
