Minute with the Minister…

‘It All Depends On The Dirt’

This week’s readings present the reality that as God’s Word is proclaimed, it is reliable and able to accomplish its purpose. Despite our best or worst efforts, God will prevail.

In Genesis, the account of the wrestling twins reveals God’s word as true as their relationship works itself out and the two boys grow into men.

In Romans, God’s life is experienced through God’s Spirit who is available to us through the person of Christ – the Word of God.

In Matthew’s gospel, Jesus begins to speak in parables about the word of God as scattered seed that fails to produce a good harvest in poor soils, yet produces abundance in good soil.

Can we look beyond the familiar and obvious interpretations of this parable to a view where we are the ground into which the farmer is sowing? Are some parts of us resistant to God’s Word? Are there parts that are shallow with poor yield? What parts produce a rich harvest for God?

If we use the agricultural metaphor, we are challenged to invite God to heal and nourish those parts within us that are resistant to his word and the action of his Spirit. And to dedicate ourselves to practices that will help create fertile ground within us for God to work effectively.

The readings invite us to open our hearts, indeed our whole being, to God’s Spirit, so we might welcome God’s word and embrace the abundant life that God offers us.

 Rev. Alan
