Minutes from the Minister:

Last week in my sermon I mentioned that one way I see my church family expressing the love of God was through the food pantry.  I thought I would expand on that this week for two reasons.

Firstly, because I wonder sometimes if we are all aware of exactly what is happening with the food pantry.  Our food pantry operates out of our office and provides emergency food parcels for those who are finding life tough.  We don’t ask people to provide any evidence of their circumstances, simply to give us their first name and for how many people the food is for.  We keep a record of first names and how many are helped through this ministry.  If we see someone come to us more than once a week, we remind them that we are an emergency service and not to be relied on every day.

The parcel itself is enough food for a day or two.  It is not luxury food but enough to put something in your belly and give you some nourishment.  I will have two sample parcels, one for an individual and one for a family at the front of the church.

We currently hand out 50 bags a month, but in the old office we were handing out over 100 bags a month, that doesn’t count how many people each bag helps. (One person may come for a whole family.)  Hopefully that is a sign of less people in need rather than them not being able to find us.

Our stocks of food supplies are running low at the moment so donations of cans of spaghetti, baked beans, small cans of tuna (with ring pull) coffee, milo, noodles, powdered milk, pasta sauce, instant soup and muesli bars will be gratefully received or if you would like to donate money please place in an envelope and marked Food Pantry.  Perhaps this week when you shop you could through one extra item in your trolley.

The second reason for sharing with you is so that you can hear of the good news story of our food pantry.  One of our more regular people dropped in a Christmas card by way of appreciation for what we do for him.  Another has come to show Tafe results as a sign of how well he is doing.  Another came to show their key because now they are no longer homeless but have a place to call their own.  Just a few stories of how valuable the help provided by our church family is to people in need.

I am rightfully proud of the good work we do.  I hope you are too! And I hope you can contribute to the work as well.

Rev Christian Ford
