A Minute with the Minister

I’m told that the Annual General Meeting held on the 25th of February was one of the quickest we have had in Lismore Parish.  Well I’m not going to go back through the minutes of the last however many AGM’s to verify that fact, but I will say that if the quickness of the meeting was due to a harmony and concord, then that is fantastic.  Hopefully it does show a unity of purpose and direction for our parish.

First let me say thank you to all who have served in the past year as Churchwardens or Parish Councillors.  Your willingness to serve and work that you have done is greatly appreciated.  To those who have now been elected or appointed as Parish Councillors or Churchwardens, congratulations on your election and appointment and thank you for your willingness to serve.  I look forward to working with you in the coming year.

I issued a challenge last week during my sermon, a challenge that we double our numbers for Easter Day.  I heard a intake of breath, probably in shock, Rev Alan said he saw a few sideways glances.  I want to say I absolutely believe we can do this.

People are already predisposed to coming on Easter Day so when we issue an invitation half the work is done.  God has already started preparing their hearts to say yes.  Of course, that leads me to remind you what we need to be doing now about issuing the invitation, praying.  I’ve already started praying for who I’m going to invite.  I’m praying for a chance to issue the invite.  I’m praying for the right words to say as I’m issuing the invite.  I’m praying that God is preparing their heart for the invite.  I’m praying that God will prompt them to say yes to the invite.  Who are you praying for?

There are lots of reasons why we will want to give up on issuing the invitation.  A lot of them are grounded in fear, fear of rejection, fear of damaging a friendship, fear of what they may think of us for issuing the invite.  Remember that we believe in a God who is greater than fear.  Constantly in Scripture when people met with God they were told not to fear.  Absolutely, it can be scary but remember our God gives us courage and is already working in our friends and families lives.

To help you in this endeavour I want you to think about who issued the invite to you.  It may have been a friend who invited you to come to church.  It may have been a family member who invited you to come.  It may have been after a faith commitment and you were asked to come along to worship.  Think about and reflect on who issued the invite, were they riddled with fears as well?  What if you had said no to them?  How would your life have been different if you never said yes to the invite?

Lastly remember that you only need one phrase, “Would you like to come to church with me?”  That is all you need.  Pray for who you will ask, ask the question, then be prepared for them to say yes and bring them along.
