Rewards upon reception

cup20cold20waterMatthew 10:40-42 – rewards upon reception

This small passage is carefully constructed. It lays out three ways in which ‘whoever’ is able to show themselves worthy of receiving Jesus and the rewards which he has come to bring.

The positive signs of receiving a disciple of Jesus make this clear; welcoming them, allowing them, with all their needs, to come into our lives, results in receiving the benefits they bring.

By welcoming a prophet or a righteous person, by offering respite and hospitality to a person in need because they belong to Christ, even by so small a gesture as a cup of water, is, in effect, welcoming Jesus himself.

It is the way we place others before ourselves, caring for them in little or large ways, that we welcome Jesus, who is always among us in his people. But Jesus does not come alone. In welcoming Jesus we welcome the one who sent him.

The way we deal with our brothers and sisters in Christ is the measure of the presence of God in our lives. The joy this brings is ours to be had now, but these words of Jesus also tell us that to welcome fellow Christians in this way is a sure way to an everlasting reward.

Matthew 10:40-42

New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

40 “Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous; 42 and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple—truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.”
