Put on the whole armour of God

Put on the whole armour of God!

Welcome to Church! Today we focus our attention on putting on the whole armour of God, as we consider our reading from the Paul’s letter to the Ephesian Church.

We might wonder in our modern day world, why we would need to consider putting on armour. After all, we are so blessed to live in ‘the lucky country’, where we aren’t confronted by war on our doorstep, or armed police at every street corner!

However amidst our pleasant affluent society, there IS a battle raging. It’s a spiritual battle, and one that’s easy to miss if we’re too preoccupied with our material world.

We have a spiritual enemy who wants to lead us away from following Jesus. We need ‘spiritual armour’ for protection! it has been said that one of the biggest tricks of the devil is to convince people he doesn’t exist; the alternate problem is blaming Satan f or everything, so human beings aren’t responsible!

The bottom line is that we need to be: truthful, righteous , ready to proclaim the gospel of peace, believing, saved, word equipped Christians! How can we be like this? Only with the help of God’s Holy Spirit, through prayer.

As with all kinds of help however, we need to be a willing and active participant as well . God wants us to be prepared and engaged in this spiritual warfare. We need to “Put on the whole armour of God”.

May we remember as we get up each morning to pray for strength to be the people God wants us to be today. To not be seduced away from our faith, but rather to be willing to shore the Gospel in word and deed, with all we are able. And of course, may we know God’s word well enough to use the sword of the spirit truthfully and effectively as we stand firm in the faith!

Ephesians 6:10-20

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. 11 Put on the whole armour of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. ” For, our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore fake up the whole armour of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness. 15 As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. ” With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints. 19 Pray also for me, so that when I speak, a message may be given to me to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, 20 for, which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that f may declare it boldly, as I must speak.
