My Yoke is Easy

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me…and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light [Matt 11:28-30 NIV].

It’s the irony of the discipleship life: the more we give the more we have; the more we surrender control the more we discover things are in control.

Jesus beckons us: ‘Come to me’, and as much as we would like to, we hold back. We cling to some notion of self-importance, or pride, or fear.

Something must happen before we can truly accept that gentle humble invitation from the heart, ‘Come to me’. The Holy Spirit must reveal what prevents us from making that move towards Jesus. Then we must allow Jesus to take it completely, or there will never be rest or surrender.

‘My yoke is easy and my burden is light,’ he promises [v30]. But do we believe him?

Why is it so hard? Life can be hard and unfair.

Is the burden light as Jesus promises? Yes it is, because in Christ our lives, no matter how difficult, are not lived in vain. The discipleship life is about living as God intended it, to the full.

And when our earthly life is over, life goes on! We get to go home to be with our Lord forever! There we find eternal rest.
