Minute with the Minister

It is a very odd feeling to be writing a message in late February that is not written during Lent, with a late Easter it brings the start of Lent later into the year.  Sometimes in the life of the church it feels like the year starts when Lent starts.  With such a late start to Lent, but such a busy start to the year I find myself in a funny place feeling like the year has started and also not started.  I guess for a moment I am Schrodinger’s Cat, both alive and dead at the same time.

So even though in one sense it feels like a late start to the year, I have made some plans that I find quite exciting.  One of the big things we are trying this year is to use about 5 or 6 themes in our preaching, bible studies and events during the year.  The first of these will be during the season of Lent and the title of the season will be “Being Different, Being Holy”.  During this time we will be exploring in our preaching and our bible studies what is means, as a  follower of Jesus, what it means for us to live different and holy lives.

Following Easter we will start a series on New Life and then a series on Sharing our Faith.  The New Life series will include the Op-Shop Fashion Parade.  So as we are talking about New Life we will host an event designed to show us new life out of old garments.  As we progress through the year we will include series on finding and using you gifts, food, and stewardship.  As with Lent each series will include preaching, prayers, bible study and other events.

Included with these series will be a bunch of resources on our website and social media for you to engage with.  I am excited by what we have planned for this year.  I am looking forward to us all working together for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  While there are some changes to the way we operate I would hope you can all enter into what is planned for this year.  Yes there will be teething problems as both Rev Alan and I adjust to something new, as I’m sure some of you will have some apprehension surrounding the changes.

Let’s all approach these changes with a spirit of generosity, exploration, excitement and expectation for what God might do within both us and our Ministry Unit.

On a completely different note I just wanted to ask for a little help from all parishioners.  Often you will hear announcements from the front of the church for you to “let the office know”.  It helps us with efficient running of the events of the parish.  I just want to ask everyone when those requests go out could you please phone the parish office.  It is very tempting to just let Margaret know when you see her at the greeting of peace or at morning tea after church.  Remember that Margaret is here to worship and fellowship as a member of the parish, remembering work stuff during worship is not her priority at that moment.  I just wanted to ask us all to be mindful of respecting Margaret’s, and indeed any who help in the office, worship and fellowship time.  Thanks for your help with this.
