Brief Moment with the Bishop

To the saints of the church at Lismore

It is a great joy to be with you all this weekend as we celebrate All Saints’ Day with the wonderful sacrament of confirmation.

All Saints’ Day is a bit of a catch-all celebration. It gives us the opportunity to give thanks, not just for the great saints of the church over the centuries, but also for our own personal saints – the people we have known who have been lights of godliness in our own lives. It could be a member of your family, someone you knew when you were growing up, a mentor, a friend. Someone like Mrs Adams down the street, who always had time for a geeky young girl in glasses; Pere Michel in Paris who got tired of always talking about God and loved a joke; a theology lecturer whose life shone with integrity and humility. You will have your own list and you might like to remember them in your prayers today. Without them, you would not have the understanding and faith you have today.

In your prayers today too, I hope you include our confirmees as they make their public profession of faith and receive the laying on of hands for the Holy Spirit to equip them for their service in the world. They are committing themselves to being disciples of Christ, following him wherever he leads. Each one of them will need support in their journey – we travel this road together, nurturing, encouraging, challenging, teaching and praying for each other. As members of the body of Christ we are like panes of a stained glass window. Each pane has its own beauty but it is together that the panes become a whole window and tell a story. We too, gathered together,

with the light of Christ shining through us, become who we are truly meant to be.

You are the saints of Lismore, members of the body of Christ. May you continually shine with the glory of God, celebrating your diversity and rejoicing in your unity in Christ.

Grace and peace,
