Message from your Minister

Many believers in the early Church believed that Jesus might return at any time, and lived with a heightened sense of expectancy and immediacy that, in its extreme form, promoted a lack of foresight and planning for the future.

Back then, the doctrine of the Second Coming occupied a much more prominent place in their everyday thoughts – a living power that excited them to live lives of holiness and watchfulness.

The early Thessalonian church carried this sense of urgency to an extreme, with members abandoning jobs, normal responsibilities and commitments. There grew a kind of hysterical expectancy we sometimes see today in extreme religious sects.

Paul’s letters to the Thessalonian church attempted to set the church he helped establish straight on this Second Advent issue, and encouraged them to pick up their game by avoiding gossip, slander, squabbling, laziness and disrespect for lawful authority, and to maintain a sense of proportion in managing daily life.

It would appear that much of the Church today has lost this ‘blessed hope’ – a sense of excitement at living in the ‘in-between’ times, awaiting our Lord’s promised return.

Have we become too secure, too cosy in the certainties and comforts our modern developed world? Have we lost that sense of anticipation and expectation of our Lord’s coming? How might our lives be different – and what would our church look like if we were to embrace that same ‘Second Advent’ enthusiasm of the early Christians?

 Rev Alan.
