Dunoon Study – Church Music

±  What is your favourite hymn?

±  How did they get singing in church when almost nobody can read?

±  Is singing hymns a waste of time?

±  Are they for entertainment or for something deeper?

These and other questions will be part of discussion at the Thursday night group meeting at Dunoon starting on 6th September.

There will time for story-telling about hymns, time for a bit of theology, a bit of history, a bit about music in the church, a bit of Scripture, a bit about worship & liturgy, a number of YouTube clips, some CDs, perhaps a song or two, and a lot more.

Where: Dunoon Church

When: Thursdays at 7 pm to about 8. 45 pm

Start: 6 September 2018

Finish: whenever we like, but probably in November or December

Cost: free – but you could bring some chips, biscuits, nuts, chocolates, or other goodies to share if you wish

Who: for all volunteers in the support of songs & hymn-singing in church and in the world – in fact, for all who are interested and wish to know more.

Drought Relief

Last Tuesday Parish Council met and amongst all the other business we had a great discussion on how we might help out our western communities that are suffering because of the drought.  I want to thank Parish Council and all of those who have expressed some interest in what we can do, as a parish, to help those struggling with drought.

The Parish Council decided on a multi-faceted approach to helping.

Firstly, over the coming month we are going to hold retiring collections to collect funds.

Secondly the Spring Fair meeting last week suggested, and Parish Council accepted that 10% of money raised at the Spring Fair will go to drought relief.  Also, at the Spring Fair, we will have a donation bucket and a prayer tree.  There will be a bucket for people to donate to drought relief.  We will also have a branch and some paper leaves for people to write prayers on and tie to the branch.  Those prayers will then be prayed at morning prayer that week.

Thirdly we will hold a dinner on the 16th of November at which we will take donations for Drought Relief.  We were thinking to have it as an Outback Themed dinner and ask people to bring a plate of food to share and some friends to share with.

Fourthly, we have decided to change our planned trip to the Jacaranda Festival to a trip to a western town to share with a community out west who are doing it tough.

There will be a lot of details to come about these events.  Watch this space for more information.  Also, we have not decided on a recipient for the money we will raise.  If you know of a worthwhile organisation that is helping out with drought relief then let Christian know and Parish Council will decide at the next meeting.

Parish Website

Finally, I wanted to update you on the Parish Website.  We are currently working on the updated Parish Website.  Our hope is the new website will go live by the end of the month of September.  As part of the update we have chosen a new parish logo.  Parish Council approved the design to the right.  You will start to see our new logo on a range of things over the coming weeks.

 Spring Fair
